Willow End - Extension

Brief: To provide an additional bedroom and living room for a small two-bedroom cottage, whilst
maintaining the feel of this turn-of-the-century, semi-detached property.

Constraints: Narrow site. The design had to be sympathetic to the period detailing on the existing cottage. Client
would not be vacating the property whilst work took place.

Solution: Create a side and rear two-storey extension to alter the existing property just as little as
possible while creating the extra space needed. We even managed to find room for an ensuite to
the new master bedroom. The ridge was kept lower than the original to make the distinction clear
between old and new. We copied details from the original house such as the arches over the new
window and back door and the banding course to mirror the original.

The clients were keen to recycle materials, the existing windows were reused in the new brickwork
and rubble was used as a base for paths. However in the case of the hanging tiles not enough
survived the removal process to make sense, so we helped the client choose a suitable
replacement.

Posi joists with metal struts were used to reduce the amount of timber in the build and to give easy
access for the services to be run through the floors. The external drainpipes were reorganised and
boxed in the corner of the sitting room. A sun tunnel was installed to bring natural light into the now
dark family bathroom. New aluminium bifold doors were chosen to give good access from the
sitting room into the garden.

The client wanted to be very involved in the construction so a detailed schedule was produced so
that he could see when various parts of the project have to be completed to stay on time. That
way he knew when he would have to put in time on the build to keep things on track.
